  • Roblox Weekly: Apr 9–15, 2023

Welcome to the first rendition of Roblox Weekly, a brand new newsletter series covering the latest and greatest news, announcements, and events that happen on the Roblox platform. Let’s recap everything that happened for the week of April 9–15, 2023… Introducing Webhooks This week, Roblox announced the ability to create Webhooks. For those unaware, a webhook is a mechanism for sending real-time notifications or data between two different applications or services over the internet, such as Roblox and a third-party messaging tool. Webhooks are useful for automating workflows between Roblox and third-party applications that you use for collaborating with your team, as they allow for real-time data sharing and processing (source: Roblox Docs ) . To get started, head to the Creator Dashboard and navigate to your Settings page. From here, you can then create a new Webhook. You will then fill out the fields to include the Webhook URL, Name, Content Type, the ability to include a Secret, and Triggers. Currently, the only supported trigger is when a user submits a “right to erasure” request. Currently, you can create up to 5 webhooks at a time. Roblox fully supports webhook notifications for Discord, Guilded, and Slack for the event of user requesting to erase their “Right to be forgotten” data. Using webhooks with other third-party tools carries the risk of not receiving all notifications. Learn more about setting up webhooks or how to make the most of webhooks . Keep Track of Where You’re Logged In Roblox has added a new Security setting that lists where your account is logged in. It shows the platform, location, date and time. When clicking on a session, you have the ability to log out of that session, or log out of all sessions. Head to your Settings page to learn more. It’s GameOver for Roblox Development Studio Gamefam Over the past few months, Gamefam has been in some hot water after multiple employees have come out about poor working conditions at the company. This week, another employee came out and called out Gamefam for punishing them for discussing wages with colleagues. Check out the news article I wrote about it earlier this week for the full story: [link] Experience Join Improvements To help improve join times and server performance in experiences, Roblox announced a few changes: Increased Maximum Server Size to 200 700 player servers have been in beta for a while. From the beta, some devs have built larger experiences so Roblox is making a change that will allow everyone to create experiences with 200-player servers. Join Queue Improvements Roblox recently released a Join Queue feature, an ordered first-come first-serve approach for joining a full-server. With the launch of this feature in March, failed join attempts have reduced by by 3% and expect to improve this further with UX enhancements. Changes to Social Slot Reservations Roblox is working on enhancing the default Roblox Optimize option to consider both occupancy and friend spots. However, to address this issue in the short term, the customizable value will be limited to 20% to take advantage of the larger server sizes. This change will go into effect on May 1st, 2023. • Toy Company Jazwares Partners With Top Roblox Creators for New ‘DevSeries’ Toy Line

Toy company Jazwares has created a new toy line in partnership with some of the top creators on the Roblox platform. This new line of toys is called “DevSeries,” and are available right now on the DevSeries website. This new line of toys includes merchandise from experiences such as Arsenal , Brookhaven RP , Jailbreak , Murder Mystery 2 , Tower of Hell , and others. Jazwares has previously partnered directly with Roblox for their exclusive line of toys announced back in 2017. However, back in June of 2022, Roblox sunset the Stars Program , a way for creators to partner with Roblox to create physical merchandise (including toys through Jazwares) for their experiences. Since the sunset, the production of official Roblox toys has slowed down.

  • Roblox Development Studio ‘Gamefam’ Under Fire for Mistreating and Underpaying Former Employees

Roblox development Studio ‘ Gamefam ’ is being accused by a former employee for poor working conditions and discussing wages with colleagues. When Joshua DeBoer realized he was doing the work of a position above his own, he started asking around — what were other workers at Gamefam experiencing? DeBoer realized others were being underpaid, too, he alleged. “People were definitely being paid very unfairly in comparison to me, by a noticeable amount,” DeBoer told Polygon in a recent article . DeBoer ended up taking the issue to the National Labor Relations Board in January. There, DeBoer alleged that Gamefam retaliated against him for discussing pay with his coworkers. Gamefam settled with DeBoer, agreeing to pay him $5,000 in unpaid bonuses. In the National Labor Relations Board document filed in January, the basis of the charge states that “within the previous six months, [Gamefam] disciplined or tealiated against an employee(s) because the employee(s) enaged in protected concerted activites by. inter alia, discussing wages, hours, or other terms and conditions of employment and in order to discourage employees from engaging in protected concerted activites.” DeBoer was then suspended for a week after talking to Gamefam CEO Joe Ferencz about his salary/rank in the company, and how he was being underpaid for the work he was doing (opinion). According to a Tweet put out by DeBoer, Gamefam forced him to reveal by name who he was discussing wages with, and also threatened to fire him if he continued to do so. Gamefam also failed to pay DeBoer’s final paycheck with the company on time, and refused to let him exercise stock options after repeated attempts. Gamefam is a global company that makes Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite games and content — typically for major brands like Sonic the Hedgehog , the NFL, Hot Wheels, and plenty more. It has staged concerts in Roblox for the likes of The Chainsmokers and Saweetie. Their website lists Marvel Studios, Mattel, Hasbro, Samsung, Ubisoft, Sega, Netflix, and Paramount Plus as some of its partners. In March, Fast Company also called Gamefam one of the “world’s most innovative companies.” This isn’t the first time Gamefam was called out for underpaying and mistreating employees. Back in December 2022, multiple statements came out from past and present employees all banning together to show how Gamefam did them wrong. Gamefam responded to these allegations on Twitter with a statement in which they state that “We pay our devs equitably and we prioritize a healthy, happy work environment with tremendous support for our teams — these are values we live by them.” This is a developing story. Some of the contents of this article were taken from Polygon .
